1985 - 1987
In the years before Circuit 01, Christian had played guitar in various bands and projects. Starting with the typical school bands, the first project that was pursued more consistently was the punk rock formation The Overcoats, which is only known locally. The band constantly moved between crass dilettantism and ingenious incompetence, although passion and the fun factor were quite high. They rehearsed in the basement of the youth center. The sampler "Sounds in the Basement" was produced on MC with other bands from Reken. The end came after the legendary concert in 1985 in Reken Bahnhof, the great success of which was probably due to the well-known songs of abuse against the local teachers. From 1986 Christian began to produce his first solo tracks with a Philips tape recorder. The instruments were borrowed from fellow musicians. Bizarre sound collages were created with the simplest of means, curious interconnections of microphones and amplifiers, as well as household appliances. Christian founded a new wave project with a musician friend that was strongly based on the sound of The Cure. At this point, Dirk first joined as a photographer. After the end of the project, Christian bought a Yamaha CX5m music computer, a DX21 and a RX15 drum machine to start a purely electronic music project.
1988 - 1993
In 1988 Circuit 01 was initially founded as a solo project. Due to the fascination for new synthetic sounds, the goal was initially to make music exclusively with synthesizers. The name of the project should already make this clear. The sound was strongly based on FM synthesis of the two Yamaha sound generators. A music cassette with 5 tracks was recorded. There was a bonus track for friends, a cover of the Joy Division song Transmission. 50 of the MC were sold. At the same time, Dirk also became interested in electronic music and bought a Korg Poly-800. A short time later, Circuit 01 had become a 2-man project. Musically we oriented away from EBM, being more influenced by New Order, Depeche Mode, Trisomie21 and Xymox. The DX21 was replaced by a Kawai K1 because it came closer to the new sound ideas with its noisy aahhh-sounds. The Poly-800 also quickly disappeared, making way for the band's first sampler, an Akai X7000 12-bit device. The lyrics of the songs dealt with topics such as the loss of old friendships, meeting new people, setting off into the world and of course the end of a great childhood love, but also the beginning of new ones. After some trial and error we found a coherent overall sound in the summer of 1989 and recorded the tracks Tragedy, Last Night and 7 Chances within a weekend. For the first time we hit the initial feeling with our music. The equipment and the recording technology was constantly improved. The old CX5m was replaced by a more powerful Atari, which now controlled a large fleet of devices. At times, Robert Winkel reinforced the band as a guitarist. Especially in the years 92 and 93 many guitar-heavy tracks were created.
1993 - 2005
Due to changed living conditions such as professional training and family, Dirk and Christian initially lost contact at the end of the 90s. Dirk moved to New York and worked there as a photographer. In the years that followed, each of them made music on their own.
2005 - today
In the second half of the 2000s, they reconnected. At first, when Dirk visited Germany, new tracks were created sporadically in Christian's studio. Thanks to the Internet and the possibility of exchanging large amounts of data online, regular cooperation is now possible despite the great geographical distance. Each of the two has set up a studio and they have networked with each other. And so new music is constantly being created.
